Jeep Revives European Lineup: Dongfeng-Co-Developed PHEV SUV Arrives in 2028

Phasing Out Large Engines, Focusing on Compact SUVs and Plug-in Hybrids — Six Models Targeted by 2030

Jeep is accelerating the restructuring of its European product portfolio. After discontinuing the Grand Cherokee and Gladiator in 2024 — and halting Wrangler imports in 2025 — the brand now offers only two ICE/mild-hybrid models in Europe: the Avenger and the all-new Compass. To comply with increasingly stringent EU corporate average CO₂ emissions regulations (2025–2027), Jeep has announced a phased introduction of three new vehicle categories starting in 2027, aiming to expand its European lineup to six models by 2030.

In Phase One, Jeep will import the all-electric midsize SUV Recon from the U.S., launching it in Europe beginning in 2027. The model debuted in North America in 2026. Phase Two brings a midsize plug-in hybrid electric SUV co-developed by Stellantis and Dongfeng Automotive, slated for European launch in 2028. Built in China, it features Dongfeng's latest PHEV powertrain: in addition to pure EV driving, its internal combustion engine functions solely as a generator — enabling operation similar to extended-range electric vehicles. Notably, fellow Stellantis brand Peugeot will also introduce a midsize car based on Dongfeng's technology platform.

Phase Three focuses on localized production: between 2028 and 2030, Jeep will manufacture two compact SUVs in Europe using the STLA One architecture. Positioned between the Avenger (length: 4,084 mm) and the new Compass, these models fill a size gap of 470 mm — significantly larger than the previous 420 mm gap between the outgoing Compass and discontinued Renegade. Internally codenamed "B-SUV Compact" and "B-SUV Large," both vehicles will offer multiple powertrain options — including full hybrid and four-wheel drive — though specific specs and configurations remain unconfirmed.

At the market level, compact SUVs remain Jeep's core strength in Europe. Although Avenger sales declined 3.5% year-on-year to 44,425 units in the first five months of 2026, the all-new Compass achieved 12,595 units in its first year — up 45% YoY. Overall, Jeep's European sales for January–May 2026 totaled 59,845 units, down 4.5% YoY — primarily due to inventory clearance. Meanwhile, Europe's compact and subcompact SUV segments continue gaining momentum: Dataforce reports compact SUV sales rose 12% to 1,208,804 units, and subcompact SUV sales climbed 7.6% to 940,230 units in the same period.

Confirmed separately, the Wagoneer S all-electric full-size SUV will not be launched in Europe — its positioning overlaps with both the Recon and the Dongfeng PHEV model. Similarly, small pickups like the Scrambler have been excluded from Jeep's European roadmap due to high emissions.
