More than a year after completing its MIIT certification in July 2025, the BYD Song L GT electric fastback SUV has recently been photographed undergoing uncamouflaged road testing in China. Its reappearance has drawn industry attention — will this sportier, higher-spec derivative of the Song L EV resume its launch schedule?

According to publicly available information, the Song L GT was first certified in July 2025 under MIIT's "Announcement of Road Motor Vehicle Manufacturers and Products," explicitly labeled as an upgraded version of the Song L EV; the Song L EV itself officially entered the Chinese market in December 2023. However, market performance has been lackluster: third-party data platform China EV DataTracker shows only 981 units delivered domestically from January to May 2026 — down 88.9% year-on-year.
Industry observers previously believed BYD had effectively paused promotion of this model, shifting focus instead to higher-volume mainstream product lines. Yet a recent set of real-world photos posted by Weibo blogger SugarDesign shows an uncovered Song L GT undergoing dynamic road testing. Its front fascia features slim LED headlights paired with a chrome "dragon whisker" full-width trim strip; it also sports hidden door handles, blacked-out pillars, and a roof-mounted LiDAR — giving it a more aggressive overall look than the Song L EV.

Certification data lists the Song L GT's dimensions at 4840 × 1950 × 1560 mm, with a wheelbase of 2930 mm and curb weight of 2380 kg. Powertrain options include three configurations: rear-wheel-drive single motor (170 kW / 228 hp), high-power RWD single motor (230 kW / 308 hp), and dual-motor AWD (combined output 390 kW / 523 hp).
Notably, battery specifications were not disclosed in the 2025 certification documents. Analysts suggest mass production may be delayed until 2026 to incorporate BYD's latest-generation Blade Battery 2.0 — claimed to charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes. The vehicle is also expected to feature the DiPilot 5.0 intelligent driving assistance system.
