2027 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 S Unveiled: V8 Performance Flagship Evolves

Hand-built M177 EVO Engine + Intelligent Air Suspension Elevates Fuel-Powered SUV Benchmark

Mercedes-AMG has officially unveiled the 2027 GLS 63 S—the flagship high-performance full-size SUV. This update goes far beyond a simple model-year refresh, representing a comprehensive upgrade aligned with global emissions regulations, driving dynamics, and intelligent chassis technologies. Retaining its large-displacement, fuel-powered performance DNA, the new GLS 63 S delivers enhanced efficiency and sharper dynamic responsiveness—without compromising raw power.

Powertrain Refinement: Hand-Built V8 Gets EVO Upgrade

The centerpiece of this evolution is the updated 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine—codenamed M177 EVO. Still assembled by hand at AMG’s Affalterbach facility under the ‘one engine, one technician’ philosophy, it features a flat-plane crankshaft, revised intake cam profiles, an upgraded high-pressure direct injection system, and a fully renewed exhaust aftertreatment system—including a gasoline particulate filter and dual-layer catalytic converters. While retaining its original output of 612 hp and 850 N·m of peak torque, the engine now complies with stringent Euro 7 and China’s upcoming National VII emissions standards.

Paired with a second-generation integrated starter-generator (ISG) and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, the GLS 63 S delivers smoother start-stop operation, low-speed torque fill, and enhanced coasting energy recovery—significantly improving throttle response and fuel economy in urban conditions. Official 0–100 km/h acceleration remains at 4.2 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 280 km/h.

Chassis & Handling: Intelligent Air Suspension + Active Roll Control

The chassis receives both hardware and software upgrades to AMG’s air suspension and adaptive damping system. It offers five ride-height settings: automatically lowering for highway cruising to reduce drag; raising up to 55 mm in off-road mode; or manually fine-tuning to any intermediate height via the central touchscreen.

A newly introduced Active Roll Stabilization system uses high-frequency sensors to monitor body motion in real time, actively adjusting anti-roll bar stiffness during cornering. This dramatically reduces body roll—traditionally inherent in large SUVs—improving steering precision and passenger comfort. Combined with AMG’s enhanced 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and an electronically controlled rear differential lock, the vehicle maintains exceptional traction across paved roads, wet/snowy surfaces, and light off-road terrain.

Sound & Interaction: Variable Exhaust + MB.OS Performance Visualization

A new valve-controlled exhaust system links directly to drive modes: subdued and refined in Comfort mode; unleashing the full V8 roar in Sport and Track modes—each acoustic profile meticulously tuned by AMG sound engineers. Inside, the latest MB.OS operating system powers the digital instrument cluster and central infotainment display, offering real-time visualization of torque distribution, lateral G-forces, individual wheel speeds, and other performance metrics—deepening driver engagement. Personalization options include multiple AMG-specific wheel designs, 12 exterior paint finishes, and combinations of Nappa leather and carbon-fiber interior trims.
