Volkswagen has officially confirmed the name of its new entry-level all-electric vehicle as ID.Up, not the previously rumored ID.1. The model is slated for its global premiere at the 2027 Munich Motor Show, with a target starting price of €20,000 (approx. RMB ¥155,800), targeting urban commuting in Europe and emerging markets.

Reinstating the 'Up' name marks a key evolution in Volkswagen's electric naming strategy. Following ID.Polo, the brand is systematically transferring iconic internal-combustion names to its ID lineup — with ID.Tiguan also scheduled to debut this summer. The original Up! launched in 2011 and served European markets for 12 years, including an e-Up! battery-electric variant; it was discontinued in 2023. ID.Up is positioned as its spiritual and functional electric successor.
The production ID.Up evolves directly from the ID.EVERY1 concept, measuring 3,880 mm in length — 280 mm longer than the original Up!. This increase stems primarily from space-optimized packaging enabled by its dedicated BEV architecture. Exterior design retains the concept's clean, crisp language while preserving the compact, agile character of a small car — prioritizing practicality and urban friendliness.

Technically, ID.Up will feature a next-generation in-vehicle software system co-developed by Volkswagen and Rivian, designed to reduce the number of electronic control units (ECUs) and wiring complexity — positioning it as a counterpart to the 'super vehicle brain' integrated into Volkswagen's new-generation Everus and BMW platforms. However, the project's core challenge lies not in intelligence, but in stringent cost control: the vehicle will extensively reuse existing platform components, leveraging the mature MEB+ platform supply chain to drive down costs.
Reportedly, ID.Up's development cycle spans roughly 18 months. Its front-end structure — from the front bumper to the A-pillar — shares substantial commonality with the ID.2, differing mainly in the drive motor. The battery pack uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells with a capacity of under 40 kWh; the rear axle assembly is carried over directly from the ID.Polo. Even amid these aggressive cost-saving measures, Volkswagen emphasizes that ID.Up will uphold brand standards — ensuring baseline driving quality and reliability.
