Volkswagen ID. Aura T6 China Approval Revealed: 4.8-Meter Mid-Size EV SUV with Xpeng Technology

The Volkswagen ID. Aura T6, a mid-size all-electric SUV, has recently completed China's MIIT new-vehicle approval process — confirming it as a China-exclusive model co-developed and locally produced by FAW–Volkswagen. Unlike global-platform vehicles, the ID. Aura T6 was led by FAW–Volkswagen and integrates Xpeng automotive technology resources, aiming to strengthen Volkswagen's competitiveness in the new-energy vehicle segment.

According to official approval documents, the ID. Aura T6 measures 4,811 × 1,879 × 1,648 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,836 mm — just 65 mm shorter than the ID.6. Yet it adopts a five-seat, two-row layout, positioning it closer to an upgraded successor of the ID.4 rather than the seven-seat, family-oriented ID.6.

Its exterior design carries forward Volkswagen's latest ID. series language for the Chinese market — sharing DNA with the SAIC Volkswagen ID.Era 9X: a full-width DRL strip, headlights integrated into the front bumper, active grille shutters; semi-concealed door handles on the sides; a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor; and an integrated full-width taillight. Wheel options include 19- and 20-inch variants. Front and rear overhangs measure 896 mm and 1,079 mm respectively, with approach and departure angles of 15° and 17°.

Under the hood, the ID. Aura T6 features a rear-mounted single motor supplied by Jingjin Electric, delivering peak output of 170 kW (228 hp) — 38 kW (51 hp) more than the ID.6 — with a top speed of 186 km/h. The battery is supplied by Gotion High-tech Co., Ltd., a company in which Volkswagen holds equity, and uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry; exact capacity remains undisclosed.

Based on declared curb weight, two battery configurations are likely: an entry-level variant weighing 2,026 kg (gross vehicle weight: 2,480 kg), and a long-range version weighing 2126 kg (gross vehicle weight: 2,580 kg).

For intelligent driving, the ID. Aura T6 adopts an ADAS developed jointly by Volkswagen and Horizon Robotics' JV Carizon, with the roof-mounted LiDAR serving as a core perception sensor. The vehicle is confirmed to support urban and high-speed Navigate on Autopilot (NOP) — a high-level navigation-assisted driving capability.

Notably, Volkswagen's June 2026 deliveries in China totaled 102,840 units — a 41.4% year-on-year decline. Against this backdrop, the ID. Aura T6 — designed specifically for local demand and co-developed with Chinese tech partners — is viewed as a pivotal move in Volkswagen's accelerated electrification strategy.
