The all-new Smart all-electric model #2 has officially entered global physical validation — paving the way for its production version's world premiere at the October 2026 Paris International Motor Show. Multiple pre-production vehicles in camouflage are currently undergoing high-intensity validation simultaneously on public roads and dedicated test facilities.
Comprehensive, Multi-Scenario Validation System
According to official information released by Smart in July 2026, #2 prototypes are undergoing systematic validation across multiple global locations — including professional test tracks, wind tunnels, acoustic chambers, climate-controlled four-post shaker rigs, and real-world public roads. Test items cover emergency lane changes, wet-surface handling, NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) optimization, curb impact response, and deep-pothole durability assessment. The vehicle previously completed winter dynamic testing in Northeast China, though Smart has not disclosed the specific test sites or partner facilities involved.
Architecture and Engineering Details Uphold Brand DNA
Smart #2 adopts the proprietary Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), retaining the two-seat layout and rear-wheel-drive configuration, and features the next-generation Tridion safety cell structure. Current validation focuses on chassis hardpoint tuning, steering ratio calibration, steering gear travel, suspension kinematics control, body rigidity, and optimization of critical structural stress points. Yang Jun, Smart's Global Chief Technology Officer, stated that this validation program aims to comprehensively assess vehicle safety performance, driving stability, and cabin quietness — providing essential data for final production decisions.
Design-wise, the production Smart #2 inherits the original Smart fortwo's "space-maximization" principle — with wheels positioned flush against all four corners to maximize usable cabin space.
Parameters Remain Target Figures; Production Specs Pending Official Confirmation
The concept version of Smart #2 previously unveiled specifications including a 35.7 kWh battery, a WLTP-range target of approximately 300 km, DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in roughly 20 minutes, and a minimum turning diameter of 6.95 m. It must be emphasized that these figures apply solely to the concept car; Smart has not confirmed whether they will carry over to the production version.
Smart CEO Tong Xiangbei described #2 as a "production-oriented model" and cited a CLTC-range target of 400 km. However, this figure represents a management-set target — not a confirmed production specification. As early as December 2025, Smart initiated preliminary validation using a modified Smart fortwo test vehicle, gradually progressing to the current pre-production phase.
Collaborating with GEELY to Accelerate 2026 Global Rollout
Smart #2 is a pivotal addition to the brand's 2026 product portfolio and will advance Smart's global strategy alongside the Smart #6. Since 2019, Smart has operated globally as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz Group and Zhejiang GEELY Holding Group. According to China EV DataTracker, Smart's June 2026 registration volume in the Chinese market remains modest: #1 led with 988 units, #5 registered 434 units, #6 reached 198 units, and #3 totaled 177 units — excluding the unreleased #2.
