Tokyo — Nissan has officially launched the Leaf Nismo high-performance variant in Japan, emphasizing sport-tuned chassis dynamics and intelligent electric-drive software optimization — not just raw power gains. The model goes on sale in Japan starting July 22, 2026, marking Nissan's continued expansion of its Nismo performance sub-brand.
As a sport-oriented derivative of the Leaf lineup, the Leaf Nismo retains the existing Leaf's dual-spec powertrain — specifically the higher-output version — without upgrading the motor or battery hardware. Its maximum output remains at 160 kW (approx. 214 hp). However, by recalibrating the e-drive control logic and optimizing throttle response curves, initial acceleration improves by roughly 20%, and engineers note enhanced sustained acceleration at higher speeds.
At the chassis level, the Nismo variant features bespoke springs, anti-roll bars, and bushings to significantly increase body rigidity and steering precision. It also adopts dampers with a bypass-valve structure to suppress body roll, paired with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 high-performance tires and lightweight, high-rigidity 19-inch alloy wheels. Aerodynamically, a new ducktail rear spoiler enhances high-speed downforce and cornering grip.
Exterior styling features an exclusive 'Stealth Gray' paint finish, while interior accents include 'Arterial Lava Red' trim elements. The top-tier Recaro sport seat variant achieves further weight reduction by omitting the BOSE audio system and power tailgate, raising the price to 7.23 million JPY (approx. $44,510), a 630,000 JPY (approx. $3,910) premium over the base Leaf Nismo.
In December 2025, Nissan stated its goal to expand its global Nismo production model count from five to ten. However, the automaker confirmed that the Leaf Nismo has no near-term plans for launch in overseas markets — including the U.S. — making this debut a purely domestic strategic move aimed at reinforcing the brand's performance identity and boosting consumer engagement.
