MG to Launch First plug-in hybrid SUV with a semi-solid-state battery in 2027

MG is accelerating the commercial rollout of semi-solid-state battery technology. Following the 2025 launch in China of the world's first mass-produced EV equipped with a semi-solid-state battery — the MG 4 — MG has confirmed that this technology will make its debut on plug-in hybrid platforms: the first semi-solid-state battery–powered PHEV SUV, the MG ZS Plug-in Hybrid+, is expected to hit the market in 2027.

According to information disclosed by MG at its recent Tech Day event, its semi-solid-state battery technology is not exclusive to BEVs — it will be applied to at least three PHEV SUVs. Leading the lineup is the MG ZS Plug-in Hybrid+, followed by the MG HS and MG S9. All three models will feature MG's proprietary SolidCore semi-solid-state battery technology, which promises higher energy conversion efficiency and faster power response — especially optimized for MG's next-generation PHEV+ system — and delivers improved overall range, power performance, and charging efficiency even under extreme temperatures.

MG's PHEV+ system offers two powertrain options: a 1.1L turbocharged and a 1.5L turbocharged hybrid engine, both paired with an all-new hybrid transmission. This transmission includes a dedicated EV mode designed to maximize synergy between fuel and electric energy. MG claims its "overall energy utilization sets a new benchmark," noting that its intelligent drive system enables the engine to maintain over 40% thermal efficiency across approximately 90% of operating conditions, while achieving up to 90% electric-drive efficiency.

Notably, MG previously announced it as the world's first automaker to achieve mass production of semi-solid-state batteries. The MG 4 launched in China in 2025 already featured this battery, and the European-market MG 4 Urban is scheduled to adopt the technology by end-2026. This expansion into PHEVs marks a pivotal shift — from a purely electric application toward broader validation of compatibility across diverse powertrain architectures.

In addition, MG previewed that its upgraded MG Pilot intelligent driving assistance system will add Navigate on Autopilot functionality by late 2027, enabling hands-free highway navigation assistance.
