Lucid Air Recall Rooted in LED Lighting Software, Fixed via OTA in July

Affects 27,185 Model Year 2022–2026 Vehicles; No Battery or High-Voltage System Risks

Recently, multiple media outlets reported Lucid's recall of approximately 27,000 Air vehicles using keywords like "fire risk," sparking public concern over EV safety. However, the reality is far less alarming — the recall stems from a software logic flaw in the low-voltage exterior LED lighting system's electronic fuse (eFuse) control, not from any safety issue related to the electric powertrain, battery, or high-voltage architecture.

According to filings with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Lucid's official statement, the issue resides in the vehicle's low-voltage lighting system: under specific conditions, the software failed to properly limit current flow to the LED lamp assemblies, potentially causing the eFuse to repeatedly attempt re-energization — leading to localized overheating, smoke, or smoldering. Importantly, this eFuse is a fully software-configurable electronic component with no mechanical fuse element, making it inherently amenable to Farizon remote correction.

In fact, the vulnerability was fully resolved in the 2.10.0 vehicle software update released in July 2026. The new version mitigates overheating by lowering the circuit's rated current threshold and disabling repeated power-cycling under fault conditions — effectively cutting off the root cause. As of August 20, 2026, 20,719 affected vehicles have already received the update; the remaining 6,466 have yet to install it. Lucid plans to mail physical recall notices in October 2026 — but the update has long been available and requires no dealership visit.

Over the past three years of monitoring, Lucid has confirmed three headlight-related fire incidents (the most recent occurred in March 2025), four smoke reports, and 33 warranty claims involving damaged wiring harnesses. Though extremely rare, these cases triggered the mandatory recall process due to potential safety implications. Lucid advises users to park affected vehicles outdoors until the update is installed — a standard recall communication practice, not an indicator of elevated real-world risk.

Notably, this incident highlights the double-edged nature of "software-defined vehicles": on one hand, OTA capability enables zero-contact, end-to-end resolution of safety issues; on the other, it reflects a development habit among some new-energy automakers — deferring validation of non-critical subsystems. That said, legacy OEMs have historically deployed similar "low-cost patch delays" as well. The public may thus view such episodes more rationally as transitional phenomena in technological evolution — what matters most is promptly installing the officially released fix.
