Facing persistently sluggish terminal sales, Li Auto has launched a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version of its i8 all-electric crossover in 2026, aiming to boost market confidence with a more cost-effective configuration. Positioned as a mid-to-large-size six-seat all-electric SUV, the RWD model starts at ¥309,800 — ¥30,000 lower than the previously launched all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant.

The Li i8 was first unveiled in China in July 2025, initially offered in Pro, Max, and Ultra trims. However, just one week after launch, it shifted to a single-trim sales strategy — highlighting weaker-than-expected initial demand. Although the subsequent AWD variant carried a listed price of ¥339,800, market response remained tepid. According to China EV DataTracker, total i8 deliveries in the first half of 2026 amounted to only 8,733 units — with June deliveries dropping further to just 779 units, underscoring mounting competitive pressure from rivals like NIO and ONVO L90.
The new RWD variant retains the i8's core design language and interior packaging: dimensions measure 5,085 × 1,960 × 1,740 mm, with a 3,050-mm wheelbase and an ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.218 Cd. Standard features include a 2+2+2 six-seat layout, with second-row seats reclining up to 145 degrees; dual 15.7-inch center-console displays; and an optional overhead 21.4-inch screen. Interior amenities include a 16-point massage driver's seat, a 20-speaker audio system, heated third-row seats, plus ventilated and massaging front and second-row seats.
Powertrain-wise, the RWD version uses a single rear-mounted motor delivering peak output of 250 kW (335 hp), paired with a 97.8-kWh battery pack supplied by Sunwoda. It achieves a CLTC-rated range of 780 km, consumes just 13.6 kWh per 100 km, and accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. It supports 800V high-voltage fast charging — adding up to 500 km of CLTC range in just 10 minutes. In contrast, the original AWD variant employs dual motors with combined peak power of 400 kW (536 hp); its 97.8-kWh battery comes from CATL, offering a CLTC range of 720 km, energy consumption of 14.8 kWh/100 km, and a 0–100 km/h sprint time of 4.5 seconds.
