All-New BMW X5 Details Leaked: Production Starts August 2026, Multiple Powertrains Including ICE, PHEV, and BEV

Last CLAR-Based X5? iX5 Offers Over 500 km Range; Neue Klasse Design Language Debuts on Combustion Models

Recently, overseas media conducted an in-depth test drive of the all-new BMW X5 and simultaneously revealed several key product details. Notably, the leaked models explicitly include a gasoline version (X5 40 xDrive), a plug-in hybrid variant (X5 50e xDrive), and a battery-electric model (iX5)—confirming BMW’s systematic rollout of multi-energy powertrain strategies centered on the X5 platform.

Confirmed production for the new X5 begins in August 2026, with the X5 40 xDrive (gasoline) and X5 40d xDrive (diesel) launching first. Beyond these three confirmed powertrains, BMW also plans hydrogen fuel-cell and range-extender versions—creating a comprehensive product matrix covering mainstream low-carbon technologies. This may be the final X5 built on BMW’s CLAR platform, showcasing its exceptional technical versatility.

The gasoline-powered X5 40 xDrive features an upgraded B58 3.0L inline-six engine paired with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) for mild-hybrid functionality. It delivers 399 hp and 540 N·m of peak torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. The 0–100 km/h sprint takes 5.3 seconds. Chassis upgrades include standard air suspension plus newly added active anti-roll bars and rear-wheel steering—optimized for urban comfort and highway cruising rather than aggressive handling.

The plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive uses the same 3.0L turbocharged engine but tuned to 312 hp. Its electric motor produces 197 hp, paired with an 18.7 kWh battery pack delivering ~96.6 km of WLTP pure-electric range and a top EV speed of 140 km/h—balancing zero-emission daily commuting with stress-free long-distance travel.

The highly anticipated all-electric iX5 remains CLAR-based but debuts BMW’s first 800V high-voltage architecture. It features dual-motor AWD: a front motor (248 hp / 305 N·m) and rear motor (330 hp / 500 N·m), combining for over 570 hp total output. Equipped with a 141 kWh battery pack, it achieves more than 500 km of WLTP range while keeping curb weight under 3 tons—highlighting BMW’s maturity in flagship SUV electrification.

Design-wise, the new X5 becomes BMW’s first combustion-engine vehicle to adopt the ‘Neue Klasse’ design language—signaling the brand’s full transition toward an electric-era aesthetic. The standard-wheelbase model measures 4994 × 2000 × 1751 mm, with a 3035 mm wheelbase. Exterior colors include Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Forest Green, Vancouver Grey, Tanzanite Blue, Carbon Black, Space Silver, Mineral White, and Smoky Quartz Grey—offering nine options that uphold the luxury SUV tradition of personalization.
