Kia Adjusts Electric Van Strategy: PV7/PV9 to Become Flagships, Targeting 250,000 Units by 2030

CEO Song Ho-seong Unveils PV7 at IAA Transportation Show, Says Mid- and Large-Sized Electric Vans Will Surpass PV5 in Sales Share

Kia is accelerating its dedicated electric vehicle strategy. At the IAA Transportation Show held in Hanover, Germany, in September 2026, Kia debuted its PV7 electric van for the first time and announced a strategic shift in product focus — revising downward the sales target for its originally planned flagship model, the PV5, while assigning greater sales responsibility to the larger PV7 and the yet-to-be-revealed PV9. Together, PV7 and PV9 are expected to account for approximately 130,000 units — slightly exceeding PV5's revised target of 120,000.

Song Ho-seong, KiaQuattroporte and CEO, stated at the show: "The real game has only just begun." He revealed that Kia is actively negotiating fleet procurement orders with over 300 global enterprises; currently, around 4,000 units of PV5 and PV7 combined are pending delivery, with more than 17,000 units still under commercial negotiation. Among them, Swedish construction services group Bravida has confirmed an order of approximately 400 PV7 units; UK-based Motability and Finnish elevator company KONE have each placed orders exceeding 300 units.

According to Kia's latest guidance, the total sales target for its PBV series — including PV5, PV7, and the upcoming PV9 — remains unchanged at 250,000 units by 2030, but the internal allocation has shifted significantly: PV5's target has been reduced from an initial 150,000 to about 120,000, while PV7 and PV9 together are now targeted at roughly 130,000. Song explained that the mid-sized van segment (where PV7 sits) is the core battleground for Europe's light commercial vehicles, with an annual market size of around 800,000 units — highly competitive, yet offering stronger growth potential.

Kia launched PV5 first precisely as a cautious response to the intense competition in the PV7's segment. Since its European launch in the second half of 2025, PV5 has rapidly become the best-selling C-segment compact electric van, capturing 37% of that segment's market share in the first half of 2026; in five countries — including France, Germany, and the UK — its market share exceeds 50%.

The PV7 is offered in both passenger and cargo variants, measuring 5,350 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width, and 1,990 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,500 mm — significantly larger than the PV5 (4,695 mm long, 1,895 mm wide, 1,915 mm high, and 2,995 mm wheelbase). Kia plans to develop a total of 23 derivative models based on the PV7 platform, with initial launches scheduled for South Korea and Europe in the second half of 2027, followed by expansion into the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions. Regarding the U.S. market, Song explicitly stated it is "not currently under consideration," citing practical challenges facing electric powertrain adoption for logistics vehicles in long-haul transport scenarios.
