Genesis Unveils GV80 HEV: World's First 2.5T Hybrid System, Fuel Consumption Down ~25%

Brand's debut hybrid model delivers EV-like driving refinement

Genesis has officially launched the GV80 HEV — the brand's first hybrid vehicle and a pivotal offering in its transition toward electrification. Scheduled to go on sale next month (January 2027), the GV80 HEV features the newly developed Genesis 2.5 Turbo Hybrid System. According to official claims, it delivers an EV-like quiet, smooth driving experience while improving fuel efficiency by approximately 25%.

Notably, Genesis had originally planned to shift fully to battery-electric vehicles starting in 2026 — but later revised its strategy, opting instead to introduce hybrid and extended-range models ahead of full EV rollout. The GV80 HEV is the first production model resulting from this strategic pivot.

The vehicle adopts a parallel hybrid architecture, integrating a combined starter-generator motor (handling engine start-stop and auxiliary power supply) and a dedicated drive motor (enabling pure-electric propulsion and regenerative braking). Its liquid-cooled high-voltage battery pack marks Hyundai Automotive Group's first application of liquid cooling in a hybrid powertrain — enhancing energy efficiency and peak discharge capability.

Per official data, the 2WD variant achieves roughly 25% lower WLTC combined fuel consumption versus the current 2.5T gasoline-powered GV80 — with even greater improvements observed under certain driving conditions. The system supports pure-electric mode at speeds up to ~30 km/h (~19 mph), ideal for underground parking, urban commuting, and stop-and-go traffic; the internal combustion engine automatically engages beyond that threshold.

In terms of performance, the hybrid system delivers a combined maximum output of 352 PS (347 hp) and peak torque of 390 lb-ft (~529 N·m) — representing increases of ~16% and ~26%, respectively, over the existing 2.5T gasoline version. The 0–100 km/h sprint takes approximately 7.1 seconds.

Design-wise, the GV80 HEV debuts exclusive exterior and interior treatments: a new Crest grille design fronts the vehicle, paired with bespoke alloy wheels. Inside, four new two-tone color schemes are introduced — including Obsidian Black + Targa Green and Ultramarine Blue + Light Beige — alongside two new wood trim options and an updated quilted upholstery pattern.
