Genesis is accelerating the expansion of its sales-leading GV70 lineup's powertrain options, with a 2027 GV70 hybrid variant recently spotted undergoing road testing on a German track. This move is widely interpreted as a direct response to Lexus RX's hybrid offerings.

Overseas spy photos show the test mule largely retaining the current GV70's design language, with only subtle changes — such as to the front grille — suggesting possible revisions. No official styling details have been released yet. Notably, Recaro bucket seats are visible through the windshield: if carried over to production, this configuration would signal that the 2027 GV70 Hybrid prioritizes sporty performance over pure fuel efficiency.

Industry speculation suggests the hybrid system will likely pair a four-cylinder engine — potentially turbocharged — with an electric motor integrated into the transmission, delivering a combined output approaching 300 hp. It bears emphasis that these figures remain unconfirmed rumors; Genesis has not yet disclosed official technical specifications.

As Genesis's current volume driver, the GV70 accounted for 44% of its U.S. sales in the first half of 2026 — 17,528 units out of a total 39,088 deliveries. By comparison, Lexus RX sold 59,904 units in the U.S. during the same period, including 4,732 hybrid variants (both conventional and plug-in). While the Hyundai Automotive Group already possesses PHEV technology expertise, it remains unclear whether a GV70 PHEV version is under development.

Timing also appears critical: hybrid vehicle sales continue to rise, while the all-electric GV70 has struggled — only five units were sold in June 2026, and just 71 units in total for the first half of the year. Against this backdrop, the GV70 Hybrid is expected to officially join the lineup in 2027, becoming Genesis's second known hybrid model under development — following the hybrid G80 sedan.
