Eight years after its last major update, BMW’s flagship mid-to-large-size SAV—the X5—is undergoing a full fifth-generation redesign. BMW has confirmed that the G65—the internal codename for the new X5—has completed final calibration at its Spartanburg plant in the U.S. and is set for global debut, ushering in a new technological era for this legendary model that has defined the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment since its 1999 launch.

Tracing back to 1999, the original X5 (E53) redefined automotive categories by integrating sedan-like 50:50 weight distribution, precise steering, and sport-tuned chassis dynamics into a high-riding body—shattering the prevailing ‘SUV = off-road only’ paradigm and pioneering the SAV concept. During development, engineers repeatedly scrapped body and chassis designs, deliberately sacrificing some off-road capability to preserve dynamic handling—a relentless commitment that cemented X5’s 25-year leadership in its class.
The fifth-generation X5 (G65) marks BMW’s first production platform to simultaneously support five powertrain options: 2.0T/3.0T gasoline engines with 48V mild hybrid systems, high-performance plug-in hybrids, the all-electric iX5, and a future hydrogen fuel-cell variant—ensuring comprehensive coverage across today’s mainstream mobility needs and tomorrow’s cutting-edge energy solutions. The iX5 will debut BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive electric drive system, an 800V high-voltage architecture, and large-capacity cylindrical batteries, paired with dual-motor xDrive all-wheel drive for significant gains in both performance and efficiency. Meanwhile, the hydrogen-powered version—slated for production in 2028—features an innovative flat carbon-fiber hydrogen storage module that preserves cabin space and enables flexible co-production across multiple energy variants on the same assembly line.
Underpinning the vehicle is BMW’s new ‘Joy Center’ central-computing chassis, delivering tenfold faster processing speed than its predecessor—enabling millisecond-level coordination among power delivery, braking response, steering logic, and regenerative braking strategies. Electronically adaptive suspension comes standard across the lineup, with optional dual-axis air suspension and 23-inch wheels to seamlessly balance comfort cruising, dynamic cornering, and ultimate stability.
In intelligent driving, the fifth-gen X5 features a next-generation SAE Level 2 assistance system built around the ‘human-machine symbiosis’ philosophy: lane-keeping correction, proactive evasion, and lateral collision avoidance operate silently and unobtrusively—intervening naturally and minimally while always preserving driver authority.
