BMW iX5 Long-Wheelbase Edition Makes China Debut: CLTC Range Exceeds 1,000 km, Features 8K Theater Screen

Tailored for the Chinese Market, Scheduled for Official Launch in 2027

BMW recently unveiled the all-new iX5 Long-Wheelbase Edition in China — the second extended-wheelbase all-electric SUV developed exclusively for the Chinese market following the iX3. Highlighted by a CLTC range exceeding 1,000 km, a world-first rear-seat 8K theater screen, and a locally optimized intelligent driving system, the model underscores BMW's deep commitment to China's premium electric vehicle segment.

The iX5 Long-Wheelbase Edition — launched alongside the X5 Long-Wheelbase Edition — is an independently engineered, China-exclusive production model. Its wheelbase measures 3,165 mm — 130 mm longer than the global standard version — significantly enhancing rear-seat space. The front fascia features a China-specific 'diagonal beam headlight' design, with optional dual-X-shaped LED daytime running lights; a full-width light strip bridges the headlights and the illuminated 'kidney grille', boosting visual distinctiveness.

Inside, the vehicle adopts a monochromatic theme, with dedicated optimization for both front and rear seats. A standard feature across all trims is BMW's latest panoramic iDrive display and panoramic vision system; for the first time in the X5/iX5 lineup, a dedicated front passenger display is offered. Most notably, the rear cabin houses the oversized BMW Theater Screen — a high-resolution 8K entertainment display enabling streaming, mobile office work, and in-car gaming across multiple scenarios.

On intelligent driving, the vehicle integrates a 'point-to-point' advanced driver-assistance system co-developed by BMW and Momenta — specifically calibrated for Chinese road conditions — and comes standard with adaptive dual-axis air suspension to ensure refined ride quality.

In terms of powertrain and range, BMW confirms the iX5 Long-Wheelbase Edition will achieve over 1,000 km under CLTC testing (approx. 620 miles). Battery capacity, motor specifications, and pricing have yet to be officially disclosed. As a reference, BMW previously completed a Qinghai Lake loop test using the iX3 50L xDrive (long-wheelbase prototype), achieving a real-world range of 800 km at an energy consumption of just 12.6 kWh/100 km (20.3 kWh/100 miles); meanwhile, the European-spec iX5 60 xDrive packs a 141 kWh battery and delivers up to 750 km (525 miles) of WLTP range. The China-bound iX5 Long-Wheelbase Edition, slated for launch in 2027, is expected to feature a battery pack slightly larger than 144 kWh, with an estimated EPA range of approximately 435 miles.
