MG will launch the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV+) variant of its ZS compact SUV in Europe in 2026, entering a sparsely contested niche. The move aims to offer budget-conscious consumers more electrified options while strengthening Chinese brands' growth momentum in Europe's PHEV market.

The ZS PHEV+ features MG's parent SAIC Motor Group's in-house 'SolidCore' semi-solid-state battery technology — a manganese-based chemistry with gel electrolyte jointly developed by SAIC and QingTao Energy. According to MG, this technology significantly improves range retention in cold weather and sustains high-speed performance and hill-climbing power output even at a low state of charge — a key upgrade that MG's chief battery scientist Li Zheng calls "a solution to core PHEV user pain points."
Notably, MG has not disclosed the ZS PHEV+'s specific pricing. Currently, the ZS lineup in Europe is dominated by its full-hybrid version, starting at €27,990 in Italy — its largest single market. Overall, ZS accounts for over one-third of MG's total European sales: 53,065 units sold in the first five months of this year, down 6.5% year-on-year.
In Europe's compact SUV PHEV segment, the ZS PHEV+ will face only two competitors upon launch: the BYD Atto 2 DM-i and the JEEP Renegade 4xe; Renault has discontinued its Captur PHEV. Data shows the BYD Atto 2 DM-i sold 21,145 units across Europe in the first five months of this year — nearly half in Italy — while Renegade 4xe sales plunged 79% to just 608 units. Additionally, the BYD Dolphin G DM-i is the segment's first PHEV compact car.
MG has also upgraded the PHEV+ powertrain architecture, including newly developed 1.1L and optimized 1.5L engines, plus an engine/generator decoupling mechanism to reduce mechanical drag during pure-electric driving and improve efficiency. Official figures claim the high-power version achieves 0–100 km/h in under six seconds.
At the market level, Chinese brands are rapidly expanding their PHEV share in Europe: from January to May 2026, total European PHEV sales rose 26% to nearly 600,000 units; Chinese-brand PHEV sales surged 272%, lifting their market share to 27%. BYD has overtaken BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo to become Europe's top-selling PHEV automaker. Meanwhile, MG's PHEV model share stands at just 8.4%, far below its 60% full-hybrid share — making the ZS PHEV+ a pivotal step in bolstering its PHEV portfolio.
