BYD Shark 6 Export Volume Down 25.76% Year-on-Year: Australia Emerges as Dominant Market

In the first half of 2026, BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid electric pickup exports totaled 20,037 units — a 25.76% year-on-year decline. This figure comes from 'Xiao Di Express', a source specializing in BYD updates, reflecting a temporary slowdown in the model's overseas expansion amid intensifying global competition in the PHEV pickup segment.

As BYD's first globally launched plug-in hybrid pickup, the Shark 6 debuted worldwide in May 2024 in Mexico, followed by gradual rollouts into Australia, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the UAE. Full-year 2024 exports stood at 11,038 units; this rose to 39,466 units in 2025 — but with a pronounced front-loaded pattern: 26,988 units exported in H1, dropping sharply to 12,478 in H2. The downward trend continued in H1 2026, with exports further contracting to 20,037 units.

Notably, Shark 6's export mix is highly concentrated. According to Australian automotive media CarExpert, the vehicle were delivered 3,398 units in Australia in June 2026 — accounting for 85% of BYD's global Shark 6 exports that month (4,000 units total). In the same period, BYD's monthly sales in Australia hit a record high of 18,881 units, cementing the Shark 6 as a key driver in the local pickup segment.

Regarding domestic launch, BYD's PR General Manager Li Yunfei stated in October 2025 that the model would enter the Chinese market "sooner or later" — but it remains in the planning phase, with no official timeline or product details disclosed. Meanwhile, competitive pressure continues to mount: Chinese automakers including Great Wall, GEELY, and Changan are accelerating PHEV, extended-range, and BEV pickup deployments overseas; Chery recently launched its Rely P3X diesel plug-in hybrid pickup (Chinese name: 'Ruiling Stockman'), entering the fray with a rated payload capacity of 1,000 kg.

Separately, according to a CarNewsChina report from April 2026, BYD is preparing for mass production of a smaller-sized pickup, potentially joining the Shark lineup to broaden coverage across segments. However, its launch timing remains unannounced. Overall, BYD's global sales reached 397,292 units in H1 2026 — a 5.2% year-on-year increase — meaning the Shark 6, though under pressure, remains a strategically important differentiator in BYD's international expansion.
