Volvo Launches 'Safety Coach' App to Help Drivers Lower Auto Insurance Premiums

Real-time driving behavior scoring linked to insurance discounts; initial rollout in Nordic countries, expansion to U.S. and multiple European markets planned for 2027

Volvo has officially launched its new in-vehicle 'Safety Coach' app, designed to analyze users' everyday driving behavior, deliver personalized safety recommendations, and offer usage-based auto insurance discounts to eligible drivers. The app is not mandatory — drivers may choose freely whether to install, enable, or authorize sharing of their driving data.

The app will debut this month in Sweden and Norway, compatible with model-year 2020 and newer vehicles equipped with Google's Android-based infotainment systems — including the XC40, EX40, C40 Recharge, S60, XC60, EX60, XC90, V90, and EX90. Once activated, the system generates a personalized 'Safety Coach Score' based on real-world braking, acceleration, and steering patterns, and delivers optimization tips simultaneously on the vehicle's central display and the driver's mobile Volvo app — all insights drawn from Volvo's long-standing real-road safety technologies and big-data models.

Volvo Driver Behavior Expert Mikael Ljung Aust noted: "Driving consistently within appropriate speed limits — and avoiding abrupt acceleration, hard braking, and sudden steering — makes your intentions more predictable to other road users and significantly reduces collision risk."

In Sweden and Norway, Volvo has partnered with local insurer Volvia: drivers who voluntarily share anonymized driving data become eligible for tailored insurance discount plans. Volvo confirmed that similar 'insurance-linked benefits' will roll out in the U.S. and other European markets later — but specific partners and terms remain unannounced.

The app was co-developed by Volvo and U.S. tech firm Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), leveraging CMT's advanced algorithms to build an individualized scoring framework. William V Powers, CEO of CMT, stated: "Data shows that when drivers consistently engage with safe-driving programs, incidents of speeding and emergency braking typically decline sharply — this forms the foundation for Volvo users to cultivate lasting safe habits and earn customized insurance benefits."

Notably, this feature aligns with Volvo's accelerated delivery of its all-electric SUV, the EX60. The 2027 EX60 began its first customer deliveries in Sweden last month; U.S. reservations opened in May, starting at $58,400; the P6 Plus variant offers up to 307 miles EPA range, while the P10 AWD version starts at $60,750 with 330 miles EPA range. In Germany, the base price starts at €54,328 (~$62,500), with WLTP range reaching 611 km (379 miles); dual-motor AWD variants — the P10 and P12 — deliver WLTP ranges of 660 km (410 miles) and 810 km (503 miles), respectively.
