Against this backdrop, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales plummeted 26%, matching the drop seen in ICE vehicles and far exceeding the overall new energy vehicle (NEV) segment's 14% decline — drawing intense industry attention.
BEVs Overtake PHEVs as Core Advantages Rapidly Fade
Data shows BEV sales dipped only slightly — by 7% — making them the most resilient NEV subsegment; extended-range EVs declined 17%, while PHEVs suffered a cliff-like drop. The root cause lies in the rapid erosion of their traditional value proposition: the dual advantages of 'no range anxiety + low operating cost.'
On one hand, mainstream BEVs priced between ¥80,000–¥90,000 now routinely deliver 400–500 km CLTC range; on the other, flash charging technology — epitomized by BYD — has entered large-scale deployment. Official claims '9 minutes of charging for hundreds of kilometers of range.' If its planned network of 20,000 flash charging stations goes fully online by end-2026, refueling efficiency in urban commuting scenarios will approach that of gasoline vehicles.
Brand Polarization Intensifies: Premium PHEVs Defy the Trend
Notably, the PHEV market isn't collapsing uniformly — it's undergoing sharp structural bifurcation. China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data reveals strong growth among premium-positioned brands: FANG CHENG BAO (+151%), Buick (+90%), Zeekr (undisclosed but ranked top three), VOYAH Automobile (+23%), and WEY (+24%). Key volume drivers include the ≈¥200,000 Fangchengbao Ti7, the ¥400,000-class Buick GL8 ENCASA, and the GL8 NEV.
Conversely, in the economy segment, BYD's PHEV retail volume plunged from 777,000 units in H1 2025 to just 337,000 in H1 2026 — a staggering 57% drop; Geely Galaxy, DENZA, and Changan Nevo also posted declines ranging from 10% to 37%.
Technology Shifts Are Rewriting Market Rules
Industry analysts note that rising battery energy density, expanding ultra-fast charging infrastructure, and converging smart features are steadily undermining the rationale for PHEVs under ¥150,000. Once BEVs eliminate range anxiety, ease refueling pain points, and no longer compromise on features, the redundancy, added cost, and maintenance burden of PHEVs' dual powertrain become unavoidable weaknesses. Going forward, PHEVs may further contract into niche roles — high-performance or specialized use cases (e.g., frequent long-distance drivers) — rather than serving as mass-market compromises.
