CATL Unveils Tectrans II Commercial Battery: Supports Megawatt-Level Fast Charging

CATL officially launched its new commercial battery platform — Tectrans II — at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover. As the second-generation solution under CATL's dedicated commercial vehicle battery brand Tectrans, the platform was previously introduced in China and claimed to support 8C ultra-fast charging.

Modular Design for Full-Spectrum Commercial Applications

Tectrans II features a highly modular platform architecture, enabling flexible integration across medium- and heavy-duty trucks, urban buses, and long-haul coaches. By adding or removing standardized battery packs, the system achieves up to 1,000 km of range — meeting diverse operational demands including trunk-line logistics and high-frequency urban distribution.

Dual Breakthroughs in Performance and Economics

According to CATL, the platform delivers several key performance advantages:

• Gravimetric energy density of 170 Wh/kg — approximately 13% higher than the industry average — enabling an additional ~0.6 tons of payload capacity at the same vehicle weight;
• Round-trip charge/discharge efficiency of 96%;
• Megawatt-level fast charging capability — 80% state-of-charge replenishment in just 25 minutes;
• Designed service life of 12 years or 1.5 million km for heavy-duty truck applications, with ≥70% capacity retention.

Additionally, the modular design is expected to cut OEM development cycles by 50% and reduce R&D costs by 60–70%.

Multi-Layer Safety Redundancy for Reliable Operation

In terms of safety, Tectrans II integrates multiple physical protections and intelligent redundancy mechanisms: a hot-formed steel top cover withstands 180 kg pressure over 10,000 cycles; an ultra-high-strength bottom plate resists impact energy up to 1,000 joules; an extruded aluminum housing features crash-reinforced ribs and lateral crush strength of up to 250 kN, plus 15-year corrosion resistance; and the battery management system employs a multi-circuit independent control architecture — automatically isolating any single faulty branch to ensure uninterrupted vehicle operation.

Collaboration with DHL to Build Green Freight Corridors in Europe

During the exhibition, CATL signed a memorandum of understanding with German logistics giant DHL to jointly develop customized electric commercial vehicles leveraging DHL's logistics network and CATL's electrification ecosystem. Pilot operations will launch in Europe to advance the 'Green Freight Corridor' initiative.
