A new analysis covering battery health across nearly 10,000 production vehicles shows that Tesla Model 3 equipped with CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries retain an average of 93.3% state of health after more than 62,000 miles (~100,000 km) — significantly outperforming all nickel-based variants.
The data comes from Swedish used-car platform Carla, which aggregated 9,954 AVILOO battery diagnostic tests conducted in Sweden between 2022 and 2026. Unlike estimates derived from vehicle dashboard readings, AVILOO directly measures actual battery state of health, which is highly objective.
When Model 3 models are segmented by cell supplier and chemistry, the differences become stark:
- CATL LFP: 93.3%
- LG Chem NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt): 91.5%
- Panasonic NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum), 77.8 kWh version: 89.8%
- Panasonic NCA, 52.4 kWh version: 88.2%
The gap between the highest and lowest health scores among different battery versions of the same model reaches 5.1 percentage points. Notably, Panasonic NCA cells — long marketed by Tesla as a premium option — show the steepest degradation.
This finding challenges the common consumer assumption that higher-energy-density, higher-cost nickel-based batteries should inherently last longer. The data clearly shows that, on the core metric of long-term capacity retention, LFP holds a distinct advantage.
Industry consensus has long held that while LFP offers lower energy density and higher weight per kWh, its chemical structure delivers superior thermal stability and far greater tolerance for 100% full charging compared to nickel-based cells. Tesla officially recommends limiting daily charging to 80–90% for nickel-based models — but imposes no such restriction on LFP-equipped vehicles. Over tens of thousands of miles, this difference in everyday usage habits accumulates, ultimately manifesting as a measurable health gap.
Notably, Tesla's original shift toward LFP batteries was driven primarily by cost reduction and easing pressure on nickel supply chains. Yet this real-world evidence suggests that users gain not only price advantages — but also unexpectedly better long-term durability.
In top 20 vehicles in terms of battery health, the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona (both sharing the same 64 kWh pack) top the list at 97.25% and 97.18%, respectively; the Model 3 LFP variant ranks eighth — the only Tesla model in the top ten.
