Nearly two decades after its discontinuation, Audi officially revives the iconic compact A2 — now in fully electric form. The all-new Audi A2 E-tron will make its global debut this autumn. Built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB+ platform, this battery-electric hatchback targets Europe's premium compact segment and aims to become Audi's most energy-efficient production vehicle ever.

The new model retains the original A2's signature one-box design language while incorporating multiple aerodynamic enhancements — reducing its drag coefficient to just 0.24 Cd, the lowest among all current Audi compact models. Features include an active closed grille, wheel arch airflow deflectors, and bespoke low-drag wheel covers, collectively cutting energy consumption by 0.9 kWh/100 km versus the standard version.
Notably, the A2 E-tron will be Audi's first model offering a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery option — a 58 kWh pack delivering an estimated 450 km WLTP range. The LFP variant pairs a permanent-magnet synchronous motor optimized for efficiency — featuring thinner silicon steel laminations to reduce core losses — with power electronics based on silicon carbide semiconductors, reportedly slashing switching losses by 33% compared to conventional silicon-based systems.
Thanks to this integrated technology package, the LFP-powered A2 E-tron achieves a WLTP-estimated energy consumption of 12.8 kWh/100 km (≈4.8 miles/kWh), matching the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA (12.7 kWh/100 km) and slightly trailing it. This figure also echoes the original A2's legendary fuel economy ethos — its diesel '3L' version consumed just 3 liters per 100 km (≈78 mpg US).
In addition to the LFP version, Audi may launch a higher-range variant equipped with a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, though specific parameters, trim differences, and pricing remain unannounced. The A2 E-tron shares its rear-wheel-drive platform with ID.3, Skoda Elroq, and Cupra Born — yet outperforms them in efficiency (e.g., Cupra Born's WLTP consumption ranges from 14.1–16.8 kWh/100 km).
Worth noting, the A2 E-tron supports vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging, enabling bidirectional power flow to supply household appliances. Production is scheduled to begin this autumn, followed by order openings. The car will be manufactured at Audi's Ingolstadt plant in Germany. While official dimensions haven't been released, it's expected to be significantly larger than the original A2 (length: 3,826 mm), positioning itself against rivals like the Alpine A390 and Mercedes-Benz CLA.
