Voyah Taishan X8 Deep Test Drive: A 5.2-Meter Large Five-Seat SUV — Does It Deliver?

Triple-Chamber Air Suspension + Rear-Wheel Steering + 800V Fast Charging: A New Benchmark for All-Rounder Flagship SUVs

Design: Refined Aesthetics Balancing Dignity and Sportiness

The Voyah Taishan X8 carries forward the Voyahfamily's design language but adopts a younger, more dynamic look than Voyah Taishan — precisely targeting the aesthetic preferences of new middle-class families. Its front fascia features the signature vertical-slat grille, paired with a full-width daytime running light strip and DLP projection headlights, delivering both high-tech appeal and strong brand recognition. Large side air intakes on either side further amplify visual impact. The side profile is sleek and poised; all trims come standard with 21-inch wheels, while our test vehicle was equipped with optional 22-inch wheels and power-closing doors on all four doors — elevating the luxury experience to a ceremonial level.

In terms of dimensions, it measures 5200 × 2025 × 1814 mm (L×W×H), with a wheelbase of 3090 mm — slightly shorter than Voyah Taishan by just 3 cm, yet still firmly positioned among the longest-wheelbase models in its class. This 'large five-seat' layout avoids the cramped third-row compromises typical of six- or seven-seat SUVs, while retaining the commanding presence and practicality expected of a flagship SUV.

Powertrain: Dual PHEV & BEV Options — Performance Meets Range

The Voyah Taishan X8 is Voyah's first flagship SUV offering both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants. The PHEV version pairs a 1.5T engine with a single-speed DHT transmission, producing 110 kW from the engine alone. System output comes in two tiers: entry-level delivers 475 kW combined power and 910 N·m torque; mid-to-high trims bump that to 490 kW and 915 N·m. Battery options include a 44.5 kWh LFP pack on base models — delivering 245 km CLTC pure-electric range and over 1,300 km total range — while higher trims adopt an 800V high-voltage architecture with 5C fast charging and a 65 kWh NMC battery, raising CLTC EV range to 370 km.

A newly added BEV variant offers two battery options — 98 kWh and 120 kWh NMC packs — with CLTC ranges of 603 km and 727 km respectively, and supports 5C ultra-fast charging across the board. Dual-motor BEV versions produce 475 kW total system output. Our test drive focused on the PHEV mid-to-high trim: with a fully charged battery, throttle response closely mimics that of a BEV — immediate and linear, making this 5.2-meter SUV feel surprisingly nimble even in urban traffic. Mid-to-high-speed acceleration remains robust and decisive for overtaking. That said, under low-state-of-charge conditions, high-speed responsiveness softens slightly — a behavior consistent with our prior testing of Voyah Taishan.

Intelligence & Cabin: HarmonyOS 5.2, Rear-Seat Luxury Redefined

The cabin runs the latest HarmonyOS Smart Cockpit 5.2, featuring two 15.6-inch 2K high-definition displays (one more than Voyah Taishan), with narrower bezels and significantly improved UI logic and display fidelity. In this large five-seat layout, the second row is unequivocally the centerpiece: the right-side seat offers zero-gravity positioning and 32-point mechanical massage; includes a 13-liter dual-door vehicle-mounted refrigerator, a 21.4-inch ceiling-mounted entertainment screen, and a dedicated fold-out table; and introduces a 60-second one-touch flat-bed function — fully reclining the second-row seats and deploying an intelligent air-inflation system to create a perfectly level 2.1-meter sleeping surface, truly turning the car into a mobile campsite.

Chassis & Handling: Triple-Chamber Air Suspension + Magic Carpet Chassis + Rear-Wheel Steering

The chassis hardware is exceptional for its class: front double-wishbone and rear five-link suspension, standard triple-chamber air suspension, and EDC Magic Carpet chassis system — the only model in China sharing this setup with Voyah Taishan. Suspension travel reaches 105 mm, supporting five ride-height settings and four damping stiffness levels. In real-world testing, Comfort mode delivers refined isolation over bumps and speed humps; Sport mode sharpens road feedback and lateral support, effectively suppressing body roll and minimizing the 'boat-like' feel often associated with large SUVs.

Official track tests validate its capability: at 80 km/h, the vehicle lands cleanly off a jump ramp with immediate suspension lock-down — zero rebound or oscillation; it clears a camelback bridge smoothly without scraping. The ±16° rear-wheel steering system reduces the minimum turning radius to just 5.4 meters, and combined with crab-walking mode, enables confident maneuvering in narrow alleys — significantly lowering the daily usability barrier for large SUVs.

Space & Storage: 1,148 L → 2,361 L — A Camping-Ready Five-Seat SUV

The biggest advantage of the large five-seat layout lies in trunk utility when fully occupied. The Voyah Taishan X8 offers 1,148 liters of standard cargo volume, expanding to 2,361 liters with the second row folded — far exceeding usable space in most six- or seven-seat SUVs when all seats are in use. Whether packing luggage for a family trip, camping gear, or oversized items like folding bikes or surfboards, everything fits effortlessly.

Pricing & Verdict: From ¥292,900 — Flagship Experience at a New Price Point

The Voyah Taishan X8 starts at ¥292,900 and tops out at ¥379,900, complementing Voyah Taishan in price and positioning to round out the brand's flagship SUV lineup. At this price, it bundles a long-wheelbase five-seat cabin, dual PHEV/BEV powertrains, 800V fast charging, triple-chamber air suspension + Magic Carpet chassis, and rear-wheel steering — covering everyday comfort, long-haul relaxation, light off-roading, and city commuting needs comprehensively. If production build quality and after-sales service consistently meet expectations, this 'new five-seat king' could become the most disruptive entrant in the premium midsize-plus SUV segment in 2026.
