Portland International Airport Deploys Overhead Fast-Charging System, Simultaneously Charging 20 Rental EVs

Rare Ceiling-Mounted Charging Solution Goes Live at PDX — Balancing Efficiency and Space Optimization

Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon, USA, recently launched an innovative overhead electric vehicle fast-charging system — capable of rapidly recharging up to 20 rental EVs simultaneously without occupying any ground space.

Deployed by charging infrastructure provider ChargePoint, the system comprises 10 dual-port DC fast-charging units — all mounted on the ceiling of the airport's Quick Turnaround Facility (QTA). Each charger delivers up to 200 kW of power and features retractable cables; staff manually lower them to connect to vehicles as needed.

Mounting the entire charging infrastructure overhead eliminates interference with vehicle traffic flow — a common issue with ground-mounted chargers — and significantly reduces the need for ground-level cabling and protective measures, thereby enhancing safety and operator workspace. Jeremiah Hartley, PDX's Rental Car Operations Manager, stated: "This innovative overhead charging solution substantially cuts cabling installation costs and effectively prevents collision damage to charging equipment caused by high-frequency vehicle turnover."

The facility serves all major rental car companies operating at PDX — including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty, and Zipcar. Given the short turnaround cycles and limited dwell times typical of rental fleets, this high-power, plug-and-charge approach helps minimize the time EVs spend out of service — boosting fleet utilization and operational efficiency.

ChargePoint's integrated fleet management software enables Farizon monitoring, fault diagnostics, and on-demand charging task scheduling — further strengthening operational control. Notably, airport environments pose unique challenges for charging infrastructure: high power demands, extremely short parking windows, stringent spatial constraints, and rigorous durability requirements. PDX's newly deployed overhead solution may thus serve as a key reference model for electric transformation at space-constrained transportation hubs worldwide.
