On June 28, NIO officially launched nationwide pre-orders for the 2026 model year NIO ES8 Large Five-Seat Version, with official launch and delivery scheduled for July 9. Notably, this variant is not a simple downgraded or cost-cut version — rather, it's a strategic enhancement of the product lineup based on authentic user feedback. While retaining identical vehicle dimensions, powertrain systems (battery, motor, electronics), intelligent driving hardware, and chassis components as the current six-seat model, the new version removes only the third-row seats and associated structural elements, redefining cabin space logic to directly resolve core family-user pain points: chronically underused third-row seating and severely constrained trunk capacity.

According to official disclosures, the estimated all-in purchase price for the new model is just above ¥380,000; the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) leasing option starts at approximately ¥280,000 — offering a ¥15,000–¥20,000 discount versus comparably equipped six-seat models. This price advantage stems solely from eliminating third-row seat rails, independent HVAC ducting, and related structural parts — no core hardware has been downgraded.
The vehicle retains its original dimensions of 5,280 × 2,010 × 1,800 mm and wheelbase of 3,130 mm; it rides on the NT3.0 integrated platform and features the 925V full-domain high-voltage architecture. Its front-and-rear dual-motor system delivers a combined output of 520 kW and peak torque of 700 N·m, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in 3.97 seconds. Standard equipment across all trims includes three LiDAR sensors, the Shenji NX9031 autonomous driving chip, dual-chamber air suspension, and rear-wheel steering. The battery is a 102 kWh ternary lithium pack, delivering a CLTC range of 635–655 km, supporting 600 kW ultra-fast charging and three-minute battery swapping — compatible with over 3,900 swap stations nationwide. Interior appointments carry over the ET9's signature 48-inch Skyline ENOVATE connected display, pilot and co-pilot "flying" zero-gravity seats, and second-row fully supportive zero-pressure seats — all retained without compromise.

Space reconfiguration is the standout feature: standard trunk volume increases from 547 L in the six-seat version to 1,334 L — plus an additional 132 L of concealed underfloor storage. With the 40:20:40 split-folding second-row seats fully reclined, maximum cargo capacity reaches 3,084 L — an increase of nearly 600 L. Second-row seatback recline angle expands up to 138°, significantly improving legroom; total cabin area measures 6.2 m², providing 1.24 m² per occupant. Eliminating the third-row partition enhances openness and visibility — balancing long-haul comfort with outdoor cargo capability.
This refinement reflects deep user insight. Since deliveries began in September 2025, the all-new ES8 has surpassed 120,000 units delivered, achieving over 10,000 units monthly for seven consecutive months. Internal brand research shows more than 65% of owners use the third row fewer than five times per year. Previously offering only six- or seven-seat configurations, NIO inadvertently diverted many families whose top priorities were spaciousness and cargo versatility. With the Large Five-Seat Version now available, NIO ES8 establishes a dual-track strategy — 'six-seat for business and family use' + 'large five-seat for all-around cargo capability' — covering distinct consumer scenarios.

Industry observers note this iteration signals NIO's pragmatic evolution from 'technology-driven' to 'user-need-driven' development — preserving flagship-grade hardware while unlocking tangible value through structural optimization. It strengthens the ES8's dominance in China's ¥400,000+ pure-electric large SUV segment and provides a replicable methodology for future product-line refinement.
