McLaren has officially launched the 788HS — the definitive and final evolution of its mid-engine supercar lineage that began with the 720S, marking the culmination and farewell of this iconic product line. Officially dubbed the "definitive and final evolution," it caps off the technical progression launched with the 2017 720S, followed by the 2020 765LT and the 2023 750S.
According to an early report by Automotive News in November 2024, the 788HS revives McLaren's long-dormant "High Sport" performance badge — previously used only on the 2011 MP4-12C HS and the MSO HS special edition. Its return is seen as a tribute to the brand's high-performance heritage.
The new model features a twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing a maximum output of 777 hp and peak torque of 590 lb-ft (≈800 N·m). Its body incorporates extensive carbon-fiber components and a bespoke aerodynamic package — including a roof-mounted air intake, a large fixed rear wing, a custom front splitter, and an F1-derived rear diffuser — all engineered to maximize track-grade downforce and stability.
Performance figures from the automaker show a 0–60 mph (0–96 km/h) sprint time of just 2.8 seconds, 0–200 km/h (≈124 mph) in 7 seconds, and a top speed of 205 mph (≈330 km/h). Carbon fiber is used extensively throughout both interior and exterior, striking an optimal balance between lightweighting and structural rigidity.
McLaren confirms global production will be strictly limited to 200 units — split evenly between coupe and convertible variants. Pricing has not yet been disclosed, though it is expected to significantly exceed the current 750S's starting price of $365,100.
Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer, McLaren's Chief Commercial Officer, stated: "It represents the ultimate expression of McLaren's supercar series that began with the 720S — and becomes only the third model ever to bear the HS badge — delivering a fitting and resonant conclusion to this widely acclaimed and deeply beloved lineup."
