A prototype of Ford's new midsize electric pickup was recently photographed driving alongside the full-size SUV Explorer on public roads — visually underscoring its compact proportions. Compared to a three-row large SUV, this upcoming EV pickup, slated for launch in 2027, appears notably lean and agile.
With the cancellation of the all-electric F-150 Lightning program, Ford is accelerating development of its next-generation electric pickup. This vehicle will be Ford's first production model built on the all-new 'Universal EV Platform' (UEV), positioned as a midsize, four-door pickup focused on efficiency and affordability — with an estimated starting price of around $30,000 (approximately RMB 216,000).
Earlier, camouflaged test mules were spotted in Long Beach, California, wrapped in patterned camouflage featuring soccer balls and hearts. A large central camera sits within the front grille, while a new-style rear spoiler has been added atop the cargo bed. According to The Autopian, the real-world dimensions appear even smaller than anticipated — falling somewhere between the Mazda B-Series (based on Ranger) and the F-150 — with noticeably lower ground clearance and an overall silhouette reminiscent of the classic Ranchero crossover pickup.
Latest road-test footage, captured by SB-Medien and shared by TheDrive, further confirms that the vehicle's styling closely mirrors the gasoline-powered Maverick — not a downsized version of the F-150 Lightning. Despite its compact footprint, interior space remains impressive: Ford claims second-row legroom exceeds that of the TOYOTA RAV4.
Inside, a large touchscreen infotainment display is visible — matching content previously revealed on Ford's 'secret website'. That site was unlocked via hidden QR codes embedded in the camouflage wrap and featured several preview videos of the new vehicle.
Technically, the truck will feature prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and integrated die-casting, and will debut with a native NACS charging port. Saleem Merkt, Ford's Senior Director of Electric Aerodynamics, stated its drag coefficient improves "over 15%" lower than that of any currently available pickups — potentially delivering longer range and lower operating costs. Production will take place at the Louisville Assembly Plant, with market launch scheduled for 2027.
