Volkswagen ID. California Cruise Unveiled: Brand's First All-Electric Campervan

Volkswagen is accelerating the expansion of electric mobility into new lifestyle scenarios. At the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf — running from August 28 to September 6, 2026 — Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will debut the ID. California Cruise: the brand's first all-electric California-series campervan.

This vehicle is not a traditional permanently modified campervan, but rather a modular solution built on the ID. Buzz all-electric platform. In collaboration with innovative outdoor gear company Stuff Bubble, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has developed a suite of lightweight, detachable inflatable camping modules designed to transform an everyday van into a fully functional mobile living space in minutes.

According to Volkswagen, these modules can be installed or removed by a single person in just a few minutes — requiring no welding, drilling, or other permanent modifications, and adding negligible weight to the vehicle. The inflatable kitchen module, tailored for the California Beach variant, weighs under 10 kg yet integrates a closed-loop water circulation system and full cooking functionality. The inflatable bed module comes in two configurations: single-person (6 kg) and double-person (12 kg). Once installed, it preserves interior walk-through space, cooking area, and storage capacity; the concept vehicle supports simultaneous rest for up to four people.

While Volkswagen has not disclosed the ID. California Cruise's specific battery capacity or range figures, it confirms the vehicle will be built on the ID. Buzz platform and is expected to offer two battery options — 79 kWh and 86 kWh — delivering approximately 400–480 km (250–300 miles) of WLTP range. Positioned as "a key milestone for the next generation of all-electric campervans," production deliveries are slated to begin in 2028.

Notably, the current-generation Volkswagen California campervan is not yet available in the U.S. market, while the ID. Buzz relaunched sales in 2027 with the new Tourer variant — including a fold-out mattress and 'Overnight Mode.' Whether the ID. California Cruise will launch in North America remains unconfirmed by Volkswagen, though its modular Everus and flexible adaptability already establish a new paradigm for multi-scenario electric mobility worldwide.
