Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN), the U.S.-based electric pickup and SUV manufacturer, announced that Chief Financial Officer Claire McDonough will officially step down on October 30, 2026, to join energy giant GE Vernova as its CFO. The leadership change comes at one of Rivian's most pivotal moments — just as its flagship new model, the R2, enters mass delivery.
McDonough joined Rivian in January 2021 and spearheaded its $13.7 billion IPO in November 2021 — the largest U.S. IPO of the decade to date. She also led the $5.8 billion joint venture agreement with Volkswagen Group in November 2024, delivering critical cash support and software platform orders. According to Rivian's statement, her departure is for family reasons — she plans to relocate to the U.S. East Coast to be closer to family — and "is not due to any disagreement."
Rivian's Deputy CFO Derek Malvey will assume the role of Interim CFO effective October 30. Malvey joined Rivian in 2021 and previously held positions at MorganMAXUS. The company stated it has launched a "comprehensive recruitment process" to identify a permanent CFO, evaluating both internal and external candidates; McDonough will assist with the transition over the next two months.
The R2 has already begun customer deliveries — first units shipped in June 2026 — and production ramp-up is accelerating at Rivian's Normal, Illinois factory. To support R2 manufacturing, Rivian completed a follow-on offering of 75 million shares in July 2026, raising approximately $1.5 billion. Its Q2 2026 financial report shows revenue up 27% year-on-year and continued gross margin improvement — evidence that the cost structure McDonough helped build is beginning to deliver results.
The R2 targets the world's best-selling SUV — the Tesla Model Y — with a starting price of $57,990; a rear-wheel-drive variant priced from $45,000 is also planned. Capturing sufficient market share from Model Y has become the central variable for Rivian's path to profitability.
Notably, Rivian's share price has fallen more than 75% from its $78 IPO price in November 2021 and currently trades near $17. Following the CFO announcement, market sentiment turned cautious. Analysts note that while executive transitions during production ramp-up naturally draw attention, McDonough's decision to step down after R2's launch and amid improving financial stability represents a relatively prudent timing.
