Recently, a Chinese owner of a JK9X electric vehicle encountered widespread restrictions on its smart functions while driving across the border with Kazakhstan. Key functions such as the vehicle's navigation, electronic fuel tank cap, and storage compartment were remotely locked for over 30 hours, sparking widespread public concern about the boundaries of cross-border use of smart electric vehicles.

According to Mr. Liu, the car owner, he set off on a road trip to Europe on July 8th. After entering Kazakhstan on July 16th, the car's infotainment system suddenly displayed a location error message, and subsequently, several non-driving intelligent functions stopped working. Mr. Liu stated that he purchased the car six months ago for approximately 500,000 RMB, and had previously reported his cross-border trip to the dealership , but had not received any warnings regarding system limitations.
On July 23, Jike responded to the Economic Observer, stating that after verification, the vehicle's location was identified as being in an overseas region, triggering the built-in security protection mechanism. "The system will first display a pop-up notification, and if the location status remains unchanged, it will initiate a continuous interface notification." The official statement emphasized that this measure is a common anti-theft and compliance management measure in the industry, aimed at responding to international import and export regulatory requirements and preventing the risks of smuggling or illegal transfer of vehicles.

Jike explicitly states that this mechanism does not affect core driving functions such as the powertrain and braking system, and the vehicle can always be driven normally; the fuel tank cap can be physically unlocked by pressing and holding the hazard light button inside the vehicle for 5 seconds, and the charging port can also be manually opened by pressing. After completing the verification of the authenticity of cross-border use, users can obtain an authorization code to temporarily lift the restrictions—but this authorization is only valid for a single country/region, and driving across multiple countries may still trigger the lock repeatedly.
Mr. Liu's vehicle has now been verified, and the system has indicated that it has been removed. JiKe stated that it will continue to optimize its strategy to " improve the cross-border travel experience based on user feedback ."
Data shows that in June 2026, Geek delivered 35,169 new vehicles , a year-on-year increase of 111%; in the first half of the year, cumulative deliveries reached 178,370 units, a year-on-year increase of 97%. As a high-end intelligent electric vehicle brand under Geely Holding Group, Geek is accelerating its global expansion. This incident also reflects the new challenges of software and hardware synergy and adaptation in the process of intelligent connected vehicles going global.
