Tesla Adds 2.4 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Functionality to Model Y Premium

Requires $80 adapter; home backup power not supported

Tesla has officially enabled Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for the Model Y Premium model in the U.S. and Puerto Rico markets. The feature allows users to draw up to 2.4 kW of power (120 V / 20 A) from the vehicle's battery — ideal for camping, outdoor work, or powering small household appliances.

The function requires an optional $80 dedicated adapter — not a built-in, fixed socket on the vehicle, but rather an accessory that attaches to the end of the third-generation Mobile Connector cable. Users must first plug the charging cable into the Model Y's charge port, then attach the adapter to the opposite end of the cable to access a standard 20-amp AC output outlet.

Notably, not all Model Y Premium models come with factory-installed hardware enabling V2L. According to Tesla's official documentation, the adapter can be selected during initial vehicle configuration or purchased separately later via the Tesla online store. Currently compatible models are limited to the Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, and Cybertruck; the Model Y Standard Range and the entire Model 3 lineup are explicitly excluded.

Though entering the V2L space relatively late, this update validates Tesla's earlier technical readiness. As reported last October, newer Model Y Performance units already included bidirectional charging hardware — held back only by product strategy. Ten months later, the capability has finally rolled out to the high-volume Model Y Premium variant.

However, the 2.4 kW output remains at the entry level for the industry: the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has offered standard 3.6 kW V2L — including both an in-cabin outlet and a bundled adapter — since 2021; the base Ford F-150 Lightning delivers 2.4 kW, while higher trims scale up to 9.6 kW; and the Chevrolet Silverado EV supports up to 10.2 kW. By comparison, Tesla's current solution relies entirely on external cabling, lacks an integrated socket, and incurs an extra cost — leaving it behind in both functionality and convenience.

Crucially, the Model Y still does not support Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) backup power. Tesla's official Powershare webpage still states clearly: "Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y are not supported." Only the Cybertruck currently offers 11.5 kW home-level power delivery — and is already certified by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) in California as a grid-interactive asset.

In short, this Model Y upgrade delivers only "campsite-grade" mobile power — not the core resilience needed for emergency grid-outage scenarios.
