Port of Los Angeles Renews 30-Year Lease with Yusen Terminals, to Invest $200M in Zero-Emission Equipment

Dual-Path Strategy: Battery and Hydrogen Fuel Cells Drive Port Green Transition

The Port of Los Angeles recently announced a new 30-year lease agreement with Yusen Terminals, extending their partnership through 2056. This agreement provides critical momentum for the port's green upgrade — Yusen Terminals has pledged to invest over $200 million over the coming years to deploy a full suite of zero-emission cargo handling equipment.

Since 1991, Yusen Terminals has operated at the Port of Los Angeles' International Container Terminal, managing a 232-acre facility spanning 212 to Berth 224. The company has long participated in multiple clean-port initiatives, progressively introducing low-carbon equipment such as electric forklifts, stackers, and terminal tractors.

This new lease not only strengthens the long-standing collaboration but also underscores a deep commitment to the port's and surrounding community's sustainability goals. As disclosed, the $200 million investment will cover a range of zero-emission equipment — including both battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell-powered assets — though specific technology pathways and configuration ratios remain undisclosed.

Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, stated: "We highly value our long-term partnership with Yusen Terminals and the pivotal role they play in advancing the port's Victory. Particularly in support of clean-air initiatives, they have proactively responded to the call — leading zero-emission equipment testing and deployment."

In fact, electrification is naturally well-suited to port environments characterized by short-haul, low-speed, heavy-load, and enclosed operations. Neighboring APM Terminals' Pier 400 has already validated this pathway: earlier this year it added 20 Orange EV electric terminal tractors, and yesterday announced an additional order for 96 units of the same model plus 36 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes.

Alan McCorkle, and CEO of Yusen Terminals, remarked: "We are proud of the operational system we've built at the Port of Los Angeles — and excited about what lies ahead. This agreement delivers long-term certainty, enabling us to sustain investments in terminal infrastructure, workforce development, and emerging technologies — while continuing to deliver reliable service to our customers."
