Hyundai IONIQ 5 Sells Over 20,000 Units in U.S. First Half, Leading Mainstream BEV SUV Segment

In the first half of 2026, Hyundai achieved a new record high in U.S. sales, with its battery electric vehicle (BEV) lineup delivering especially strong performance. According to official sales data, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 sold 20,730 units in the first six months — up 9% year-on-year — solidifying its position among the top-selling mainstream BEV SUVs in the U.S. market.

This result enabled the IONIQ 5 to outpace General Motors' flagship BEV model — the Chevrolet Equinox EV (16,249 units sold in H1, down 41% YoY) — and also surpass the entire TOYOTA bZ series (17,553 units sold in H1). Notably, the IONIQ 5 has become one of the best-selling non-Tesla BEV SUVs currently available in the U.S. market.

Meanwhile, Hyundai's three-row BEV SUV, the IONIQ 9, demonstrated explosive growth: sales reached 4,858 units in H1 — a staggering 380% increase year-on-year. Both models are produced at Hyundai's Metaplant America facility outside Savannah, Georgia.

Overall, Hyundai's total U.S. sales in the first half of 2026 amounted to 450,568 units — up 3% year-on-year — with electrified models (including BEVs and hybrids) accounting for 33% of volume, serving as the core growth driver. Hybrid vehicle sales jumped 71% quarter-on-quarter, led by the Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata, and Tucson HEV models.

In contrast, several competing BEVs faced clear headwinds: the Ford Mustang Mach-E sold only 11,632 units in H1 — down 47% YoY — while the Honda Prologue posted 8,407 units, down 48% YoY.
