MINI 1998 GT Special Edition Launches in U.S.: 2.0T Engine, Black-Orange Two-Tone, Priced from ~¥247,000

MINI has officially launched its 1998 GT Special Edition in the North American market. Built on the MINI Cooper C platform, the model pays homage to the legendary 1969 MINI 1275 GT through bespoke exterior styling, interior badging, and chassis tuning. Notably, the '1998' in its name refers not to a calendar year but to the displacement of its 2.0-liter (1998 cc) turbocharged engine.

Exterior highlights include Midnight Black metallic paint, bold orange '1998 GT' decals along the side profile, and matching orange GT badges on the C-pillar and tailgate. It rides on 17-inch JCW Sprint Spoke black alloy wheels with orange center caps, complemented by JCW aerodynamic front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and a roof spoiler — all enhancing its sporty visual presence.

Inside, the cabin features JCW sport seats upholstered in Black Vescin synthetic leather with retro-inspired knit texture. The steering wheel is also a JCW unit, equipped with heating and paddle shifters. Bespoke 1998 GT badges appear on door sills, the center console lid, and other key touchpoints — reinforcing the theme throughout.

Power comes from the same 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the current Cooper C, delivering a maximum output of 120 kW; peak torque figures were not specified in the original text. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission remains standard. While powertrain specs remain unchanged, the vehicle undergoes exclusive John Cooper Works calibration: suspension is stiffened and braking components upgraded for sharper handling response.

The special edition starts at $36,875 USD (approximately ¥247,000 RMB), excluding a $1,350 destination and handling fee. Pre-orders are now open, with first deliveries scheduled for autumn 2026. MINI has not yet confirmed whether the 1998 GT will be offered in China or other overseas markets.
