New Energy Strategy Accelerates; IONIQ V Set for Launch in H2 2026

Beijing Hyundai recently released its May 2026 sales figures: the company sold 17,065 new vehicles that month, achieving positive year-on-year and month-on-month growth. Export sales stood out particularly, surging 99.4% month-on-month and rising 67.1% year-on-year.

Among core models, domestic sales of the Tucson L and Elantra both doubled month-on-month, while the Sonata maintained steady growth. As the backbone of Beijing Hyundai’s SUV lineup, the 2026 Tucson L—featuring new exterior colors like Midnight Black, an upgraded intelligent cockpit, and L2+ advanced driver assistance systems—continues to strengthen its appeal among urban families. Its interior features soft-touch materials and a wraparound design, complemented by a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central infotainment display—balancing tech sophistication with everyday usability.

This sales rebound reflects deepening strategic investment. At the April 2026 Beijing Auto Show, Hyundai Motor officially unveiled its new development roadmap for China, reaffirming its core strategy of “In China, For China, From China to the World,” and naming the IONIQ brand as the central engine for its new energy transition. In December 2024, Hyundai Motor and BAIC Group jointly injected RMB 8 billion into Beijing Hyundai, focusing on five key areas: localized manufacturing, new energy R&D, channel expansion, supply chain optimization, and production capacity upgrades.

In terms of product planning, Beijing Hyundai aims to launch 20 all-new models in China over the next five years, covering all major market segments. Its first domestically produced BEV—the IONIQ V—is confirmed for launch in H2 2026; a new compact pure-electric SUV will follow in H1 2027, with additional mid-size and full-size BEVs and EREVs scheduled thereafter. The brand targets combined domestic sales and exports of 500,000 units annually by 2030, reestablishing itself as a leading growth player among joint-venture automakers.
