General Motors is accelerating its electrification strategy across Latin America. Following its high-profile announcement of the Cadillac brand's entry into South America's largest automotive market, GM has confirmed it will offer free charging at dealership locations nationwide to Chevrolet electric vehicle owners in Peru.
The initiative responds to rapidly growing demand for plug-in vehicles in Peru. According to Melissa Black, GM Peru's Marketing Manager: "In the first half of this year, sales of electrified models in Peru rose over 86% year-on-year, reflecting significantly heightened consumer interest in these technologies. Yet this progress must be matched with expanded charging options — so from the outset of this program, we integrated EV charger installation into our dealer development plan for selling such vehicles."
Data shows that 8,285 plug-in Chevrolet vehicles — including the stylish Captiva and compact Spark EUV — were sold in Peru during the first half of 2026 alone. Notably, some of GM's electric models introduced in Latin America are rumored to draw on Chinese technology platforms or supply chains, though the company has not disclosed specific technical origins or partnership details.
Currently, the free charging service covers major Peruvian cities, including the capital Lima, as well as Arequipa, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, and La Libertad. All participating dealers grant charging access to Chevrolet EV owners during regular business hours.
Analysts note that while public charging infrastructure remains in its early stages across Latin America, the rapid rollout of charging capacity at sales points could help alleviate range anxiety. However, the long-term operational sustainability and service scope of such dealer-led charging programs remain uncertain — especially in regional markets where electricity pricing volatility, grid stability, and viable commercial business models have yet to be established.
