Following 'fast-grown chickens' and 'crash courses,' the term 'rushed cars' has become a hot topic across China's auto industry in 2026. At the 2026 China Automotive Forum, BeijingHyundai General Manager Fenggang openly criticized certain automakers for drastically shortening R&D and validation timelines — effectively turning consumers into unpaid 'test drivers.'
His remarks quickly resonated across the industry. Xue Haitao, Deputy General Manager of SAIC Motor General Motors, declared at the pre-sale launch of BuickElectra L7: 'We categorically refuse to build rushed cars.' At the G9L launch event, Xpeng Auto Chairman He Xiaopeng stressed: 'High quality, high safety, and global readiness are non-negotiable fundamentals of automobile manufacturing.' Li Xueyong, Executive Deputy Quattroporte of Chery, reiterated on social media: 'Cars aren't fast-moving consumer goods — they must withstand diverse global road conditions, climates, and driving habits.'
'Rushed cars' don't simply refer to shortened development timelines: traditional multinational automakers typically require four to five years to develop an all-new ICE vehicle, while some new-energy models now roll out in as little as 18 — or even 17 — months. Yet Lu Fang, Chairman of VOYAH Auto, pointed out: 'A shorter development cycle doesn't automatically make a car 'rushed.' Structural simplification, supportive policies (e.g., reduced durability test mileage for NEVs — from 30,000 km to 15,000 km), platform reuse, and advances in simulation technology all legitimately support accelerated development.
The real red line lies in cutting corners or compromising safety. While consumers can't directly verify the completeness of DV/PV validation, warning signs include: mass outbreaks of identical faults post-launch; overreliance on 'virtual simulations covering millions of kilometers' while skipping real-world high-temperature and sub-zero testing; and frequent model revisions within the first year — including fragmented, piecemeal upgrades to core components. Industry insiders advise ordinary buyers to avoid first-generation models built on entirely new platforms; instead, wait six months after launch to assess authentic owner feedback before purchasing. Prioritize mature products validated through full-scenario road tests and long-term market use — and steer clear of vehicles that rely heavily on OTA updates to patch fundamental hardware flaws.
Regulatory authorities have already drawn a firm line. In early 2026, MIIT revised its 'Requirements for Approval Review of Road Motor Vehicle Manufacturers and Products,' mandating that reliability testing shift from internal corporate control to a national compulsory requirement effective January 1, 2027.
