Schneider Electric Launches 48A Smart Home EV Charger with Dynamic Load Management to Avoid Panel Upgrades

Real-time power scheduling adapts to existing home electrical infrastructure, lowering the barrier to EV charging

As electric vehicle adoption accelerates, insufficient capacity in residential electrical distribution systems has become a major obstacle for users installing Level 2 AC EV chargers. Schneider Electric has recently launched its new smart home EV charger — the Schneider Charge — featuring built-in dynamic load management, designed to help some users avoid costly upgrades to their main service panel or service capacity.

According to Schneider, traditional solutions often require full electrical system upgrades when a home's existing meter capacity or service panel cannot support 48A Level 2 charging — a process that typically costs between $2,000 and $6,500 or more, depending on wiring conditions and local installation requirements. In contrast, the Schneider Charge uses its SmartAmp system to monitor total household electricity demand in real time and automatically adjust EV charging power: when high-load appliances such as electric ovens or clothes dryers are operating simultaneously, the system temporarily reduces charging current; once other loads decrease, it resumes high-power charging.

This load management functionality operates locally without requiring Wi-Fi connectivity — it remains fully functional even during internet outages and needs no additional gateway or monitoring hardware. The charger delivers a rated output of 48A / 11.5 kW and supports both J1772 and NACS connectors. It ships standard with a 25-foot cable. The initial model is hardwired; a plug-in version is expected to launch in early 2027.

Notably, the Schneider Charge system has achieved UL 3141 certification — a standard specifically developed for power-control devices intended to prevent electrical system overloads. UL Solutions notes that certified intelligent load management systems like this may serve as a cost-effective alternative to panel upgrades. However, whether such a system can truly replace an upgrade must be determined case-by-case by a licensed electrician, based on the home's wiring, panel specifications, service capacity, and local regulations.

The companion mobile app enables real-time monitoring of charging status, Farizon parameter configuration, and scheduling of off-peak (valley-rate) charging. Additionally, the charger complies with the OCPP 1.6 open communication protocol, reserving compatibility for future integration into utility or grid-service demand-response programs — though Schneider has not disclosed any active partnerships in this area.

The Schneider Charge is now available in the U.S. and Canada through authorized distributors and Schneider's official online store. Pricing has not yet been announced. For installation services, Schneider is partnering with Qmerit, a professional residential electrification installation platform.
